JOMO (The Joy of Missing Out)

I learned about this term JOMO (the joy of missing out) from a friend who was explaining how so many people live in this fear of missing out, that they go along with the crowd just to avoid feeling left behind. It's so pervasive in our society and we can ...

Jennifer LaBaw’s 500 Mile Run

Jennifer LaBaw was an unlikely Crossfit Games athlete. Diagnosed with epilespy at age 8, she describes a life with constant tingling in her right arm. But she didn't let that hold her back. In 2011, she placed 6th in the Crossfit Games, making her the "sixth fittest person in the world." Now, she's using her status as an athlete to bring awareness to epilesy with a 500 mile run from the New Mexico border through the Colorado Rockies to the Wyoming border to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of America. Her goal is to raise $50,000.  Read more on CNN.com... Before You Leave

You just finished a great workout. You're on the floor in a heap, reaching up to anyone who walks by. Your coach reminds everyone to clean up their weights and while you do that, you start talking to your buddies about round three when things got tougher than you imagined they would be. You grab your water bottle and your gym bag and you start walking out the door. Wait... before you leave, don't forget ...

Advice from a Masters Athlete

Today is July 4th. Traditionally, most CrossFit gyms do HERO workouts to honor military and first responders that have died in the line of duty. Recently, I read a Facebook post from a CrossFit master athlete who summed up his 10 month journey. It hits on so many good points that ...

Is Strength Masculine or Feminine?

I have had this ongoing conversation with several other women and there are two opinions out there regarding strength. Everyone wants to be strong in some form or another. But some women feel afraid to "look" strong because they feel like that will make them look masculine. I disagree with every fiber of my being. If I'm walking down the street, I want to look strong enough that no one will consider jumping me and ...

Virtuous Form

When is the best time to work on virtuous form? The obvious answer is "all of the time".  You never want to move unsafely just to get through a workout.  Sometimes, egos get in the way and we want to see ourselves on top of the leaderboard. But in the pursuit of that goal, good form can go out of window in order to finish first or to lift the most on the barbell. We have to ...

Take a knee

Sometimes it feels like things are done to you, when really those things are done for you. #onthebench As with any sport, sometimes athletes experience set backs. Some days the weight that you're used to lifting for various WODs seems impossibly heavy. Sometimes, you cannot reach, "functional capacity" because mentally you are just off your game. But sometimes, health or injuries keep up from reaching high intensity over broad and modal time domains. This is ...
